The Definition of Minority Reinforces Economical, Societal, and Systematic Inequalities: This Blog Post was Supposed to be Titled the Money is Out There for Your Business!

This blog post started out to be about the finances available to people in businesses in the Hip Hop industry. Then a funny thing happened, turning this blog into a argument against the word minority to achieve financial prosperity.

First, I began to read that "in 2013 alone, OFN Member CDFI's provided 3.6 Billion to low-income individuals and communities"(OFN, 2015). Initially, this all sounded very promising.  I went on to include that certain financing was given specifically to populations lacking in resources: "CDFIs target underserved populations....[including] minorities"(OFN, 2015).  I was going to name this blog post "the money is out there for your business!"

That was until the word "minorities" just wouldn't sit. And thus, the blog is as follows:

If we are first to solve any economical or societal problems, we must first understand the roots of those problems. No weed is killed, if not for by the roots.

Why are the words defining people important in solving a problem? It is crucial to understand arguments made in the book The Power of Definition: How Perception Becomes Reality, "Definition creates perception and perception often leads people to act in aberrant ways"(Okoli 2015). - aberrant to mean "departing from the right, normal, or usual course"((Dictionary.com). In agreement, I would say that calling a person a certain name can disempower that person. Child Protective Services would agree, calling it verbal abuse - if a parent was to call their child "stupid","ugly", "weak" etc. In that case, it would surely be agreed that words do hurt.

There is a consensus amongst self-help gurus, that words have the power to affect how one views oneself. They all encourage people to say positive things about oneself - I'm Beautiful! Bully campaigns the world over, would agree that calling a child names can destroy their self-esteem - "Definition positions for exploitation and destruction, people who have not acquired the ability to assert their rights, those who have lost the ability to assert their rights, and people who in the face of identity crisis engage in irrational definition of themselves as a protest or rebellious action"(Okoli 2015). Thus, it matters how people are defined in the U.S. systems whether in the economical and finance systems, political, school systems, and so forth.

I would argue that it is a double edged sword to offer programs with aims of economical stimulus, to influence an activity while still defining the people with the words that bind them psychologically, and so forth.

Hence, I make my argument against using the word minority and its derivates when referring to people because it is at a hinderance to those defined as such: "Origins of national minorities. The origin of the term “national minorities” can be traced to Europe, where it was applied to various national groups who were identified with particular territories by virtue of long residence in them but who had lost their sovereignty over these territories to some more numerous people of a different nationality" (Minorities International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences, 1968). Allow me to point out the part about having "lost their sovereignty."

It is important to point out that the origin of this definition of minority to describe a people, was created by the very people who enslaved them. If we are still being defined as a people who have "lost their sovereignty" then we are still likened to a slave, one who has lost power to those in the seats of power. Yet, we still lack consensus on whether classism, racism, and inequalities still exist, and that freedom from such reins must be achieved.

"In some cases the minority groups ceased altogether to occupy their original territories and were dispersed throughout the nation of which they were now subjects" (Minorities International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences, 1968).We are again being defined by a word - minority - that keeps us as "subjects" in this society:

"More often [minorities] stayed in the same place but in a subordinate position, since the  dominant political and economic institutions were now run mainly for the benefit of the larger national group. The latter usually enacted laws to regulate the political existence of the minorities; for instance, they might have to send their own community leaders to the national assembly instead of being able to vote individually for candidates in a national election. Even the areas in which they could live or the occupations they could pursue might determined by law; at the least, the dominant nationality regarded them with suspicion, as the Czechs were regarded under the Austro–Hungarian Empire" (Minorities International   Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences, 1968). (This was intended to be a block quote despite the formatting issues of Blogger)

In conclusion, this breakdown of the definition and origin of the minority word points to deeper issue of how political and economic institutions are by design racist and classist to benefit those monopolizing the power to benefit the dominate group. It is evidenced that there exists further need to solve the problem of racism and classism on an institutional level. Thus, minority may be more than just a word, but a smoking gun to the larger problems at hand before true financial prosperity can be achieved for such people. Furthermore, it can be pointed out that the definition of minority also carry's a connotation of "suspicion" for such people which points to the opposite of fair treatment in the judicial and policing systems.

What Experts Say about Business Plans!

Cockerton warns against spending too much time talking about how great the business idea or the technology is but that investors surely want to hear about how the business will make money.

In seeking funding, not only should the business prepare a business plan, but also a well-developed pitch that can be delivered in either a detailed presentation and a  shorter elevator pitch.(Brummelhuis, 2008).

Andrea Cockerton founded Mudhut Consulting. Her company emphasizes that their clients only have once chance chance to get it right. If the pitch is wrong then it can cost thousands, millions, and so forth. More importantly, failed pitches hurt the business and personal brand. Mistakes can even hurt the value of the company. (Cockerton, 2015)

Chuck Blakeman has a very interesting perspective on business plans. He says that asking how a business will meet it's objective in the long-term is wrong! First of all, he give a cute story to give a tangible example of what he means. Blakeman tells of how Ben & Jerry's first wanted to sell bagels, until they found out that a bagel machine was too expensive and that an ice-cream machine would be much cheaper. They didn't know all the hows of how their business would succeed, but instead they adapted. (Blakeman, n.d)

However, that's not to say that asking how is irrelevant in business planning. Instead, how is more of a tactical question to solve problems in the short-term, but isn't strategic in planning for the long-term.  Blakeman warns against depending on planning out all the details of how on the long-term. Such a rigid plan can make the business blind to what's going on in present reality. (Blakeman, n.d)

Low Oil Prices, Electricity, & What That Means for Your Business

PSA Business Owners You Want to Hear This! I know that gas prices will not stay this low, you know it too. Thus, electricity bills will go up. I can protect your from this if you are in a deregulated area. Allow me to break it down to you. I didn't get it before. I wasn't a math person (Even though I was selected to go to a special math and science school, I just don't find it that interesting.) Anything talking about converting kWh hours to mwh, determining rates per kWh hours, oil prices, etc sounded like the last thing I wanted to do.

I'm a music person. I'm an art person. Not that long ago, I didn't know anything about oil except that it was polluting the environment and was aiming to go off the grid. Seriously, I pondered on living in a tent next to firelight. Anyway, fast forward many interesting happenings along my spiritual quest, now I'm an electricity consultant. Wow. We can go into my moral views later but for now we'll talk about the money. K so let me put it to you simple. Somewhere, something clicked in my head, and a new world began to open.

Saudi Arabia & OPEC are dropping their prices for one reason only. They want to put U.S. Shale-Oil producers out of business. The kind of oil we produce here through fracking and so forth (polluting the water source) costs us more to produce then the kind of oil produced in Saudi Arabia. Thus, they can lower their prices more than the U.S. producers and put them out of business. K, bad for some U.S. businesses, but good for others. If you are in a deregulated electricity market like areas of TX, this means you can do what companies like Southwest Airlines do to save billions. They buy fuel when oil prices are low 3 - 5 years in advance. Then when prices rise they still have their fuel purchased at the lower rate. This is the same thing you should do with your electricity bill to save thousands, millions, over the years.

I work with Power-Mark Resources and together we have partnerships with the major electricity providers like Direct Energy, GDF Suez (built the Suez Canal), and I will get you the lowest rate you can get. If you go on a website I guarantee you will not see the deal I can give you. Not only for your business, but I will bundle you a deal with your house - giving your house a commercial rate too. People just don't know the diamond mind I'm sitting on. Just as soon as the U.S oil producers go out of business what will happen?! You know Saudi Arabia will look around yep our monopoly is back on, and they will rise the prices. The people that bought their oil/electricity now for 3 - 5 years in advance will be ahead of the game. ‪#‎InsiderSecret ‪#‎JoinMyWealthGroup

Digital Marketing Tips for Businesses in 2015!

How is Digital Marketing applied to the business' marketing strategy? With this blog, read a summary of what industry experts' view about mastering digital marketing. Connect to YouTube videos about digital marketing trends for 2015. Hoppin Online Marketing highlights Digital Marketing Trends of 2015 in their YouTube video. WSI Digital Marketing also point out 5 Digital Marketing Trends for 2015 in their video. Use the provided Emarketing Textbook link to help create your digital marketing plan.

David Edelman and Luke Collin, members of McKinsey Publishing inform on how to master digital marketing

First of all, the authors point out that the model of creating a quarterly campaign to market around a certain product is out-dated. Clients/customers want interaction throughout the year to develop a relationship. There should be something for everyone at all times, not just campaigns focused on one product. In digital marketing, one can see the search terms individuals use, where on the site they've been looking, and the social interaction they've had with the brand. Thus, this new model pushes having something for each of them with a range of content and offers. It's not enough to have 2 offerings but one may even need to have 100s or more. It is important to think of digital marketing not as a separate component - one more thing you do for marketing. Rather, the whole operation must be rethought with digital marketing in mind, "because it is about using data, faster cycle times, more interactivity with more empowered customers"(Collin, 2014).

Don't become a digital zombie! Just about everyone knows of someone who spends so much time looking down at Facebook, etc on their phone that they exclude the room of people around them to the point of missing out on forming valuable relationships. It is still very important for senior executives to get out of the office and actually talk to real live people and see how they interact with the brand and products.

These experts point out 3 important pieces of advice to remember in order to solve digital problems: Prioritize data. Organize the right people from different job roles to work together. Instead of getting intimidated by digital problems, use a rapid-cycle of test and learn with small scale pilots

Ask these important questions when developing the business' digital marketing plans: "What is our product strategy, what is our customer-experience strategy?....What is our data strategy? How are we getting more information about our customers? How are we going to use that information to drive value? Is that going to lead our customers to do more business with us so that we can then gather more information back?" (Collin, 2014).
